Executive Master of Science in Management of Information Systems

Executive Master of Science in Management of Information Systems

CORE COURSES (REQUIRED)

  • Object-Oriented Programming (CIS 9310)
Managers are provided with an understanding of the concepts underlying object-oriented software development. Students are introduced to the C++ program language and basic programming concepts from the perspective of the object-oriented programming paradigm. Included among the topics are data specification and manipulation; classes and objects, and their use in object-oriented programming; C++ syntax; program structure and control flow; coding styles and techniques; and the programming implementation process, i.e., compiling, linking and testing.

  • Principles of Database Management Systems (CIS 9340)
Virtually all information systems being developed today are built upon databases. This course introduces the fundamentals of database management systems including the design and implementation of databases. The relational data model is introduced and the Structured Query Language (SQL) is used. Students develop a database from the design stages through implementation using a PC-based database management system.

  • Networks and Telecommunications (CIS 9350)
Telecommunications and networking are the lifelines of contemporary information systems. This course introduces a broad range of networking technologies and issues applications of these technologies in business settings. Special attention is paid to the Internet and the impact that it has had. Students undertake projects related to the specification and design network systems.

  • Systems Analysis and Design (CIS 9490)
Processes, techniques and issues related to the design and development of business information systems are introduced in this course. Major topics include dataflow diagrams and CASE, structured design, feasibility, interface design, Web (html) Design, and implementation. Topics are reinforced with a term project that is used to visualize, design and develop an implementation plan for a business information system.

  • Dynamics of Competition, Industry Structure, and Corporate Strategy (MGT 9610)
The purpose of this course is to develop an understanding of the situation wherein the ability of a firm to create a viable strategy is largely circumscribed by the intensity of competition in the external business environment and the industry structure forces a firm to define its position. We will also study the dynamics of competition in emergent, growth, maturing, and global industries through a series of case studies.

  • Project Management: Strategic Design and Implementation (MGT 9730)
Study of strategic management of projects that involve change and creation of something new or different. Intended to help students better prepare for the current and future business worlds, which are characterized by change and demands for innovation. Topics include project initiation and planning, organizational structure, teamwork, leadership resource planning and scheduling, project termination, and quality and culture consideration. A variety of real cases are discussed, including service process re-engineering and development of a new product/service, computer software, an advertising program, and financial investment. Students are assigned a term project for a hands-on experience of project management.
